Sustainability & Resilient Roads
|
Safer roads for everyone, everywhere – How can we do it |
Education Lab (D&I) |
||||||||||
11:00am –12.30pm |
Building climate change resilience and durability into our road network while smoothing the path to Carbon Zero: Australia has a history of experiencing natural disasters, but with the impact of climate change, these events are becoming more frequent and intense. Recent extreme weather events and bushfires have emphasized the need to make our transportation system more sustainable and resilient to adapt to these challenges. Investing in road infrastructure is a long-term commitment. Generally, roads are designed to last between 20 to 40 years, while bridges can last up to 100 years. It is crucial for road planners, designers, and road asset managers to consider the potential impact of future climate change and take appropriate steps to mitigate the impact. This session will discuss climate change's potential impacts on our road networks and explore mitigation measures to improve their resilience and durability. • The impacts of natural disasters on our communities • Addressing the impact of climate change and natural disasters on our road networks • Road Resilience, an international perspective |
Achieving safer roads is a result of a number of factors coming together . As industry members playing different parts it is essential that we work across all stakeholders to achieve safer outcomes for workers and the community. Areas to address:
• Why do incidents occur? • What is the impact on our communities? • Is lack of harmonisation across jurisdictions a barrier? |

Education Lab (Sustainable Pavements) |

1:30pm – 3:00pm |
How can we better utilise technology and innovation to contribute to the reduction of carbon footprint in the construction industry and manage our road networks effectively and efficiently. Will AI help to produce more durable pavements ?? The changing needs of our communities and the advances in vehicle technology will have a significant impact on the way we use and build roads into the future. We need to consider what these impacts will be to ensure our planning, design and construction practices ensure a financially sustainable road asset. |
Paving our way to carbon zero requires a concerted response through a collective effort across a diverse workforce. Attracting and retaining the best talent drives innovation, builds organisational capability and addresses skills shortages, increases productivity and best practice outcomes across all aspects of the flexible pavement industry, delivering on our sustainability goals.
