TechTalk – May 2022 | High RAP in asphalt mixes – what we need to know

Registrations closing: 17 May 2022

Date: 19 May 2022 | Time: 10:00 am – 11.30 am AEST

The use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in asphalt mixtures is not a new concept, however, it has seen an increased interest for both economic and environmental reasons. The use of RAP in fact reduces energy consumption, lowers transportation costs required to obtain quality virgin aggregate, decreases the material going into landfills and preserve non-renewable natural resources.

The tech talk will present an overview of what we need to know when using high percentages of RAP in asphalt mixes.

Randy West, NCAT
Randy West director of NCAT for the last 15 years’ is a registered professional engineer with a wealth of experience in recycling of hot mix asphalt, mix design and materials characterization, quality assurance, pavement construction and pavement failure investigations. West earned his bachelor’s and master’s from Auburn in 1987 and1989 respectively, and doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Florida in 1995. Randy leads the world-renowned asphalt pavement research centre collaborating with numerous state DOT’s, FHWA, NCHRP, NAPA and businesses in the asphalt paving industry.

Hassan Tabatabaee, Cargill
Hassan Tabatabaee is currently a Global Technical Manager at Cargill Industrial Specialties, responsible for research and development of bio-based specialty chemicals, with special focus on asphalt rejuvenators and rheology modifiers, adhesion promoters, and emulsion systems. His publications and reports cover a broad range of topics, especially the development of characterization methods and models for assessment of modified asphalt performance and distress mechanisms. Hassan completed his master’s and bachelor’s degrees at Sharif University of Technology and holds a doctorate in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Laszlo Petho, Fulton Hogan
Laszlo is a registered professional engineer with over 15 years’ experience in asphalt mix design and quality control, material characterisation, pavement performance assessment and implementation of innovative technologies both in Australia and abroad. Laszlo currently holds the position of pavements manager at Fulton Hogan Industries. He spent many years in the road construction industry, and he also worked as a university lecturer before joining ARRB in 2010. He is the technical leader for various Austroads, TMR and MRWA research projects. Laszlo holds a master’s degree in civil engineering and a PhD degree in asphalt pavement technology.
