Scope
This course covers the material properties, manufacturing principles, specifications and the selection of a broad range of bituminous binders and emulsions. A detailed understanding of the current Austroads Technical Specification ATS3110 – Supply of Polymer Modified Binders, along with standards for cutback and bitumen emulsions is provided. It also provides guidance on the selection of PMBs and emulsions for different treatments and the benefits of their use.
At the conclusion of this course participants should be able to:
+ describe various types and grades of bituminous binders.
+ have an understanding of the state and national specifications of bituminous binders and emulsions.
+ describe the main polymer types and their influence on the properties of the PMBs.
+ select an appropriate PMB to suit service conditions.
+ describe the main types and grades of emulsion.
+ outline the main advantages/disadvantages of using emulsions compared to hot bitumen/cutback bitumen.
+ describe ‘breaking’ and ‘curing’ of emulsions, and how these characteristics influence the performance of emulsions in the field.
+ select a suitable emulsion for routine and periodic maintenance applications.
+ describe the main handling/application requirements for emulsions and PMBs.
+ outline handling requirements for storage and transportation of PMBs and emulsions.
